home is not a place its a feeling

If you follow along on my Instagram, you know that I travel quite a bit. Living the suitcase life really makes you have an appreciation for home. Or at least the moments that feel like it. Recently in my travels I started to realize that home is not a place, it’s a feeling. And that was solidified tonight as I watched an amazing Florida sunset light the sky on fire with yellow, pink and purple.

While I may be at my home in Florida, the feeling I get when I watch the sun go down is a feeling of tranquility, and that to me is what home really is. As I sat in admiration of how lucky I am to be able to witness such beauty, I couldn’t help but feel like I was being hugged. As I explored this idea that home is a feeling, I became flooded with what it feels like to me.

Home to me is…

The moments that take your breath away.

When you want to close your eyes to take a picture so you never forget it.

The times when you feel most peaceful and at ease. Almost as if time were singing to you.

The feeling you get when you walk into a place that just has your name written all over it.

When you hear a song and the rhythm speaks to you in ways that move you.

A touch or a look from someone you care about that melts you.

When you don’t want to leave.

When you catch yourself smiling only to smile even bigger.

A place that feels like a warm and cozy blanket.

Where you find the most balance. Your center.

The space where you flourish.

A stress free zone where the noise of the world is tuned out.

Where you feel most creative, light and alive.

What lights you up and gives you energy.

The place where you find rest and solace.

When you catch yourself laughing so uncontrollably that you think you might burst.

When you feel a sense of treasured sweetness and delight.

The place you feel most whole and connected.

A moment of love that is so intense it makes your heart shake.

The feeling that you are right where you are supposed to be.

Where you feel you can thrive and your eyes fill with possibilities.

A piece of this life where walls do not exist.

When you feel like you are weightless, effortless and timeless.

What captivates you and breathes life into you.

Where you can be completely and totally yourself, quirks and goofiness included.

When you feel a connection to your innermost being that whispers “this is it.”

Peaceful.

Calming.

Soothing to your soul.

What feels like a sanctuary in heaven.

Home is what makes your skip a heart beat.

Home is all the comfort you seek.

Home is where you can most passionately and purposefully pursue your dreams.

Home is the place where the desire to escape ceases to exist.

Where you long to be. Your happy place.

My eyes, mind and heart have captured so many precious memories over the years. As I think back on all the fond times, I can remember feeling at home inside so many of them. Home is a sacred and cherished place to visit, no matter where you are physically.

Often in mediations we are told to go somewhere that makes us happy where we feel at home. This could be certain setting, with a person or doing something we love. In any case, it’s a place in our mind and in our heart where we feel safe. Knowing what this feels and looks like is so important. It not only gives us appreciation but it also helps us  become more in tune with our intuition.

Having a sense of what home feels like is a great guide for our souls to know when we are in alignment with paths that lead to our greatest good. For me, I use this as a gauge for staying on track. As soon as feelings of anxiety, worry, anger, frustration, disappointment or discomfort enter the scene, it tells me that my spirit may be trying to communicate with me. It lets me know something is off balance and that I may have drifted away from home base.

I’m all for stepping out of comfort zones to learn and grown in a healthy way. However, if someone, somewhere or something isn’t making you feel at home or in harmony, it’s probably time to reevaluate how much time you spend there. Because if it’s disrupting your peace, chances are your intuition might be trying to tell you something.

It’s important to be aware of how you are feeling and how your emotions shift in different environments. Pay attention to when you’re feeling at home and when you’re not so that when you find yourself in the midst of any sort of chaos you can always bring yourself back to your sanctuary. Not only that, but so that you can use your awareness and intuition to guide you back home into safety.

Find what makes you feel at home and relish in how it always gives you exactly what you need. Find your true home, build your life around it and don’t settle for anything less than the life you feel you were meant to live. After all, home is where the heart is. And that is a miraculous place to be.
